Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a trauma reprocessing technique that can reduce triggers and reactivity, help you process information and reduce maladaptive thoughts, and allow you to make new connections. The core technique relies on eye position in order to tap into stronger emotions and deeper memories. Brainspotting has been theorized to access the subcortical part of the brain more associated with survival and automatic reactions. The core premise of Brainspotting is the phrase- ‘where you look affects how you think’. You may have already noticed that looking in a certain direction helps you access certain types of memories or emotions, or that you get “stuck” in certain eye positions when experiencing difficult emotions. You may already be doing a type of Brainspotting!
I am Phase II trained in Brainspotting under Cherie Lindberg and working towards full certification in 2026. I have used Brainspotting both as a clinician and a client and I believe that it is effective, adaptable, and that it accesses the brain’s innate ability to heal itself. You may feel more calm on a given subject, better understand what you experienced, experience physical releases, or even access meaningful imagery. Your brain knows how to heal itself, and we rely on your and my intuition in our sessions together. Brainspotting is particularly effective with trauma, phobias, and personal growth- you deserve to get past your stuck places and reach your full potential.
David Grand created brainspotting as an adaptation and combination of EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, a more holistic approach to healing. His main website can be found here. Research on Brainspotting’s effectiveness is ongoing with a summary found here, as well as a great article on why Brainspotting is receiving resistance in the medical community can be found here. I personally have witnessed brainspotting be immensely helpful with issues previously not well treated by medication, Electroconvulsive Therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or EMDR. That said, every person is different and best served by different treatments. Reach out to me to see if Brainspotting might be a good fit for you.
